Hunter safety program offered

SHEPHERD -- The AgriLife Extension offi ce in San Jacinto County is holding a hunter safety education class on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 26 and 27. The State of Texas requires any hunter aged nine years or older or anyone born after September 2, 1971 to complete a hunter safety course before hunting alone in the state. Individuals born before the 1971 date do not have to hold the certifi cation in order to hunt in Texas, but must obtain it to hunt in any other state. The exam only has to be taken and passed once in a lifetime. The upcoming class is open to anyone aged nine or older, and will be held at the Extension offi ce in Shepherd located at 11 Carrier Avenue off of Hwy. 150 from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 27. At-vottendance is mandatory for both days in order to receive credit for the class. The class fee is $15 per individual and must be paid in cash, no checks will be accepted. Registration is limited to the first 50 people to RSVP and pay for the class. Attendees must bring their social security card and a pencil or pen with them to class.
