Stella Powell Jones dies
San Jacinto News- Times - December 2009

Mrs. Stella Carmon (Powell) Jones, 96, of Huntsville, formally of Coldspring, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009 in Oakhurst.  Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday,
December 29th, 2009 at 11:00AM at Bethel Baptist Church near New Waverly with Rev.
Reagan Cooksey officiating.  Burial will follow in the East Sandy Cemetery.  Visitation
 will be from 6:30 to 9:00 PM on Monday at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsivlle.
Mrs. Jones was born on Saturday, December 6th, 1913 in the Pine Valley Community of
Walker County, the youngest child of William Ross and Lottie Lenora Deason Powell.
She married Marvin Cleborne Jones on May 27, 1935 in Tomball, Texas and he preceded
her in death on November 20, 2006 after 71 years of marriage.
Mrs. Jones attended First through Third grades at Blackjack School in the Blackjack
Community of Walker County.  The Powell family moved to Huntsville and Stella started
Fourth grade at the Demonstration School of Sam Houston College, where she continued
through high school graduation.  After high school, Mrs. Jones majored in Home Economics at Sam Houston College and graduated with a BS degree the morning of
her “Wedding Day.”
Following their marriage, Mrs. Jones taught school for one year at Pearson Chapel in
Houston County.  In the fall of 1936 she joined M.C., and began a 29 year teaching
career in Coldspring, where she taught high school Biology, Fifth grade, and was head of
the Home Economics Department for many years before they both retired in 1973.  Mrs.
Jones was also the Home Demonstration Agent for San Jacinto County for a number
of years.
During her 67 years in Coldspring, Mrs. Jones was very active in the community and
school activities. She was a former member of First Baptist Church of Coldspring where
she taught Sunday school for over 60 years.  Mrs. Jones was also active in the Retired
Teacher’s Association, and a former member of the Coldspring Garden Club, Alpha
Study Club, Home Demonstration Club, San Jacinto County Fair Association, DAR,
DRT, and Order of the Eastern Star.  At her death, Mrs. Jones was an active member of
Bethel Baptist Church where she attended with her family as a child.  She was very proud
that the land on which the church and cemetery are located were donated in part by her
Great-Grandparents, Oliver and Caroline Quinn Powell.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by a brother,
Infant Robert Rodney Powell, 3 sisters, Miss May Etta Powell, Miss Robbie Iva Powell,
and Mrs. Willie Lenora (Powell) Costilow. Also an uncle, Mr. Eddie J. “Ed” Powell, and
3 aunts, Mrs.Annie Bell (Powell) Johnston, Mrs. Jodie Elizabeth (Powell) Gunter and Mrs. Ida Carrie (Powell) Johnston.
Mrs. Jones is survived by her son, Jimmy and wife Mary Cathy of Huntsville, grandson
William Ross Jones of San Antonio, Texas, and granddaughter, Laura Maries Jones of
Rockport, Texas.  Three step-grandsons, Robert Michael Clark of Coldspring, Texas,
Army Sgt. Robert6 Tye Clark of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Matthew James Armer of Yorktown, Texas. Three step-granddaughters, Karen Armer Ornelas of Huntsville, Texas,
Melissa Armer Clawson of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Jamie Armer Lantron of Livingston, Texas.  A sister-in-law,Lottie Jones Price of Oakhurst, and 6 step-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be David M. Roberts, Mike Patrick, Kevin Lunsford, Steve Gardner,
Christopher Lawrance, Russell Peer, Richard Armijo and Don Michael Lunsford.  Honorary Pallbearers, Billy Ross Roberts, D`Autrol Harrison, John Powell, Tom W. Hollis, Billy Jones, Pete Jones, Philip Johnson, Joe Hogue, Bob Brumley, Dalton Currie,
Robert Atkins, and members of the Bethel Brotherhood.
In addition to usual remembrances, memorials may be given to Bethel Baptist Church,
East Sandy Cemetery Association or the charity of the donor’s choice.
The family wants to especially thank D`Autrol Harrison, La Tsha Harrison, Cynthia
Harrison and the staff (past and present), of Maxine’s personal Care Home, Dr. Walter
D. Toronjo and staff, Dr. Jerry Wood and staff, Judy Jones, the entire church family,
Larry and Andy Graves and the staff of Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home.
