Former tax assessor heads county elections
San Jacinto News- Times - February 2009
COLDSPRING – Former San Jacinto County Tax Assessor-Collector Barbara Shelly has taken over the job of county elections administrator. Shelly started her new job Dec. 29, 2008 and admits it was “overwhelming” when she fi rst came in. So far she’s been busy re-organizing the multi-room offi ce, which is located in the Senior Annex Building, adjacent to the San Jacinto County Senior Citizen’s Center. “A new fi le room has been established. This allows for more security of records,” Shelly said. A former storage room will be used for current elections. While some of the new job is unfamiliar to her, other aspects of it are not. “I feel pretty familiar with voter registrations because I worked with those as tax assessor- collector,” Shelly said. Currently she is working on cleaning up the county’s voter registration records. Thumbing through recent published obituaries, Shelly said, “The obituaries are a good way of removing names from the voter registration records. Duties of the county elections administrator not only include keeping up with voter registrations but also providing election information to the public, providing unoffi cial election results, providing an election calendar and providing candidate application information. If you have questions concerning upcoming elections, voting or you need to register to vote, Shelly said, “I’m here everyday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., fi ve days a week, except for holidays.”
