COLDSPRING – Former Coldspring-Oakhurst High School teacher/coach Dennis Isbell was sentenced last Thursday in the 258th Judicial District Court, San Jacinto County for indecency with a child and sexual assault. After pleading guilty, Isbell received a 10-year prison sentence and will have to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life, according to San Jacinto Criminal District Attorney Richard Countiss. During the sentencing, two complainants read an impact statement to the court outlining how the sexual assault against them has changed their lives. In April, 2010, more than 148 counts of indecency with a child and sexual assault were charged against Isbell by a San Jacinto County grand jury. Isbell, 40, was a basketball coach and high school speech teacher. He was placed on administrative leave with full pay and benefi ts on Nov. 11, 2009, after allegations of improper conduct were brought against him. On Feb. 4, 2010, Isbell resigned as the investigation was continuing. He was later arrested in March, 2010 at his Willis home on charges of indecency with a child. Both victims were under the age of 17 when the offenses occurred. One victim was 14 years old when it started in 1997 and Isbell was teaching in the junior high school in Coldspring. Indictments one through 134 for indecency with a child and sexual assault were offences against Isbell’s second victim. Indictments 135 through 148 for sexual assault were offenses against Isbell’s fi rst victim.
