New business center planned

SHEPHERD – Shepherd Economic Development Corporation (EDC) Board of Directors are examining cost estimates for the construction of a business center. The proposed 40 foot by 100 foot business center will include offi ce space for the EDC and other businesses wanting to locate in the City of Shepherd. About $170,000 was originally budgeted for the project, according to Shepherd Mayor and EDC Treasurer Glenn Dillon. “We need to fi rm all our quotes up. I think they are not even quote-quality yet,” Dillon said. Dillon is optimistic that considerably less than originally anticipated will be spent on the project. EDC board members voted to subcontract several elements of the construction process, including installation of a slab, electrical fi xtures and plumbing, which would leave erection of the structure for a contractor. The EDC has already saved an estimated $10,000 by acquiring an agreement with the county and having former Pct. 2 San Jacinto County Commissioner Royce Wells remove a pre-existing structure from the building site. The business center will be located at the intersection of Bell Street and Byrd Avenue across from the Shepherd Senior Citizen’s Center.
