Honoring those who died in war
San Jacinto News- Times

Area veterans took time to remember their fallen comrades Sunday during a special Memorial Day ceremony held on the San Jacinto County Courthouse lawn with veteran Edward Smith (opposite) who performed a song. A special presentation was made to the family of two brothers from San Jacinto County, Pfc. Truman Gilbert and Pfc. Freelum Gilbert, who were killed in 1944 during WWII. Presenting the American Legion Patriotic Wreath to their sister, Juanita Gilbert Lilley-Owens, (seated below) is First Vice President of Post 629 Dan Shelton. Seated with Owens is her son, James Meredith Lilley. Other Gilbert family members attending included Lynn Jackson, Leon Vann, Lanette Jackson and Greg Jackson. Also participating in the ceremony were bugle player James Kelly, Kate Carroll, president of the Women’s Auxiliary; Ken Martin, second vice president of the Sons of the American Legion and Debra Burks, director of the American Legion Riders, all of American Legion Post 629 of Camilla. Second Vice President Chuck Baxley introduced U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady’s representative Brandon Reese who read a statement. An estimated 100 people attended the ceremony; among those were San Jacinto County Sheriff James Walters, Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Beth Sewell, Pct. 3 Commissioner James Moody, Pct. 4 Justice of the Peace Greg Magee; San Jacinto County Historical Chairman Betty Magee and Cleveland American Legion Post 383 Commander
