Pre-k program in COCISD is topic of March 23 meet
San Jacinto News- Times - February 2009

COLDSPRING -- An informational meeting on the Coldspring-Oakhurst Consolidated Independent School District pre-kindergarten program is scheduled for Monday, March 23 at Street Elementary School. Parents of children who will be 4-years-old on or before September 1, 2009 are invited. Registration begins at 5 p.m.; the meeting is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. Currently, both COCISD and Greater East Texas Community Action Head Start offer pre-kindergarten programs that, as mandated by law, require a minimum income to qualify for enrollment. Information on these programs will be available at Monday’s meeting. Furthermore, guests will be asked to comment on a new option, a tuition-based pre-kindergarten offered by COCISD. In January, school district trustees approved a measure permitting administrators to investigate the possibility of a COCISD tuition-based pre-kindergarten program. Superintendent LaTonya Goffney told trustees, “We just want to offer more educational opportunities for all 4-year-olds in our community.” State law mandates that public schools offer income-based Pre-K, but it also allows tuitionbased programs. For income-based services, the cap for a family of four is an annual gross income of $39,220. Tuition-based fees are assessed at the discretion of individual school districts. Cindy Cummings, COCISD director of curriculum, says, “Studies show that pre-kindergarten programs are worthwhile. Pre-K students are much more ready for kindergarten. Their oral language skills as well as their social skills are more developed. “However, we need to assess the level of interest as tuition fees will be based in part on participation.”
