DETCOG expects federal funding cuts
San Jacinto News- Times

CENTER – Deep East Texas Council of Governments (DETCOG) Executive Director Walter Diggles told the Deep East Texas Council of Governments Board good news and then bad news, Thursday at the John D. Windham Civic Center in Center. The good news was another exceptional annual audit report on DETCOG’s fi nancials from the auditing fi rm of Alexander, Lankford & Hiers, CPA. The DETCOG Board of Directors accepted the audit report and commended the DETCOG staff for their good work. It was also good news that recent federal and state budget cuts for this fi scal year will not negatively effect DETCOG operations before October 1. The bad news: expected cuts in federal funding for the Regional Housing Authority’s Section 8 HUD housing assistance program will result in a reduction in the number of housing vouchers for low income households in the region. Diggles went on to say that the board should expect other DETCOG programs to be effected by proposed cuts in the state’s biennial budget. In other action, the board approved a resolution proclaiming April as Fair Housing Month. That resolution is part of DETCOG’s commitment to affirmatively furthering fair housing. The board also approved resolutions proclaiming April as Child Abuse Prevention Month and in support of a US 190 / I- 10 Corridor feasibility study. Acting on the recommendation of its Regional Transit Advisory Committee, the DETCOG Board also gave its approval to the recently completed update of its Regional Transit Needs Assessment. The board heard a report from the Criminal Justice Advisory Committee and approved the recommendations for several grants through the Governor’s Office of Criminal Justice for the region. The board also heard a report from the steering committee for the Area Agency on Aging of Deep East Texas on their programs reviews and efforts to elect representatives to the Silver Haired Legislature. After their report it was noted the annual Area Agency on Aging Mayfest will be held this year at the Pitser Garrison Civic Center in Lufkin on Thursday, May 19.. DETCOG will be holding its Annual Awards and Membership Meeting instead of a regular board meeting in May. The membership meeting will be held at the Pitser Garrison Civic Center in Lufkin on Thursday, May 26.
