Play is serious subject for COCISD committee
San Jacinto News- Times
COLDSPRING -- Play is a serious subject for a playground committee in the Coldspring- Oakhurst Consolidated Independent School District. The committee reported to COCISD trustees meeting recently in regular session. Trustees had a brief agenda of standard business items and reports. The playground committee organized following September’s Trojan Community Forum. Parents asked the district to consider new schoolyard equipment for James Street Elementary School and Coldspring Intermediate School. Administrators replied that regular budget funds were not available for this expense, but leaders established a committee to study the needs, cost and availability of other fi nancial resources. Committee members are trustee, Tony Sewell; JSE principal Dr. Elizabeth Jarvis; CIS principal Vikki Curry; JSE counselor Angela Ballew; and parent LeeAnn Currie. Reporting for the group, Jarvis reviewed information from four vendors. She said bids range from $12,000 to $50,000, depending on choice of equipment and installation needs. No decision has been made yet regarding the bids. The group has decided, however, that initial acquisitions would be for CIS. “The need there is greater,” Jarvis said adding, “It really is, so that is where we will start.” Regarding funds, the committee is researching philanthropic resources such as grants and private donations. Jarvis said, “Ms. Currie has taken the lead on this. She has visited with (COCISD) Administration about an endowment fund or or foundation. She has also taken letters to several local large businesses requesting their participation.” In final remarks, Jarvis thanked COCISD maintenance director Johnny Washington and maintenance department employees. The department is making interim repairs and refurbishing current equipment. Due to the Thanksgiving holidays, the next meeting of COCISD trustees is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., November 16. The board meets at the Jones Auditorium/Professional Development Center. The public is invited.
