JROTC student wins at fall drill meet
COLDSPRING -- After executing a nearly flawless individual performance of rapid fire drill and ceremony commands under the attentive eyes of vigilant drill instructors, Coldspring- Oakhurst High School sophomore Steven Welch won a second place trophy at the 14th Annual Sheldon “Salute to Veterans” Invitational Drill Meet on Nov. 10. Steven’s trophy winning performance in a competition known as “Knock Out” ensured COHS would not go home empty handed and ended their drought at this highly competitive fall drill meet. In this competition, participants figuratively “knock out” their competition by correctly responding to the drill commands barked out by the drill instructors. In “Knock Out” Welch grabbed the spotlight from all but one of the other 700 Air Force Junior ROTC cadets representing 35 senior high schools, including perennial area powerhouse programs like C.E. King, The Woodlands, Cy Falls, Klein Collins and Kempner High Schools. Welch and the COHS Air Force JROTC proved to all that if you’re willing to work hard and dedicate yourself to hours of practice, then you can achieve any goal against any opponent— hooah!
