Intoxication manslaughter charged in death of 11-year-old boy
SHEPHERD – An Iowa man has been charged with intoxication manslaughter in the death of an 11-year-old boy killed near Shepherd early Sunday morning. According to Texas Department of Safety Trooper Kevin McKellar, 11-year-old Samuel Scott Courtney was one of nine passengers in a suburban that was hit about 3:54 a.m. Nov. 11 on Hwy. 59 by a vehicle driven by Edgardo Alvardo- Camacho, 34, of Iowa. McKellar said Alvardo- Camacho was driving on the wrong side of the road when the vehicles collided. “The suburban rolled over, coming to rest on its hood. Samuel Courtney was killed and his father, Brian Courtney, 39, both of Kyle, Texas, was critically injured,” McKellar said. According to McKellar, all the passengers were taken to Cleveland Memorial Hospital where Brian Courtney was flown by air ambulance to Hermann Hospital in Houston. The other passengers were treated and released. McKellar said Alvardo-Camacho was driving under the influence. He was transported to the San Jacinto County Jail where he was charged with intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault. The incident is still under investigation, McKellar said.
