Shepherd man killed cleaning gun with friend
SHEPHERD – A Shepherd man was accidently killed Nov. 30, while cleaning a gun with a friend, according to San Jacinto County Chief Deputy James Fitch. "David Atkinson, 30, was struck in the neck by a bullet while he and a friend were cleaning a gun," Fitch said. The incident occurred at 2:30 a.m. on Bob McGowen Road in Shepherd. "The incident is still under investigation," Fitch said. Another incident still under investigation is a shooting that took place around 3 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 24 at a home on Industrial Blvd., in Shepherd. Fitch said Christopher Scott Hayes, 28, was shot in the abdomen with a rifle that reportedly was fired by a homeowner, Chad Best, 24. Hayes was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston where he remains listed in critical, but stable condition. Fitch said initially the call to 911 dispatchers reported the incident as a man shot in the commission of a burglary. "We are still trying to determine if a burglary was the reason for the shooting," Fitch said. Both shooting incidents will be taken before a San Jacinto County grand jury once the investigations are completed, Fitch said.
