Sheriff James Walters passes

San Jacinto County Sheriff James Walters died early this morning after a long battle with cancer. Chief Deputy Robert Long will handle day to day operations at the sheriff's department until commissioners name a successor. Commissioners have already called a special meeting for Thursday to discuss an unresolved matter regarding a public official bond for the newly elected Tax Assessor-Collector Kelly Selmer. On Tuesday, commissioners gave Selmer 48 hours to obtain a bond or they would consider her office vacated. As of 10 a.m. Wednesday, it was unclear if commissioners would add the now vacant sheriff's office to Thursday's agenda as well.
