Memorial service held for LJH student who drowned Thursday

COLDSPRING – Hundreds attended a memorial service Sunday for Tyrek Thompson who drowned Thursday, July 11, while swimming with friends in Lake Livingston. According to San Jacinto County Sheriff's Department Captain Tim Morgan, the 14-year-old Lincoln Junior High School student was swimming near his grandmother's home in Lakeview Estates in a cove with three friends around 5:55 p.m. when, "he went down and didn't come up." Using sonar, members of the Cape Royale Volunteer Fire Department, Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Warden Wayne Corley and the San Jacinto County Sheriff's Department later recovered the body. An autopsy was ordered by San Jacinto County Pct. 4 Justice of the Peace Greg Mage. In an effort to support his family, friends and the entire COCISD community held a memorial service Sunday, July 14, at the Jones Auditorium, where art supplies and writing materials were available for students to create cards or notes for Tyrek's family. Ministers and counselors were also available to help in the healing process. Tyrek was known as an exceptional athlete, particularly in pole vaulting, track and football. He was also talented in art and was well-liked by teachers and students, according to a press release sent by the school district. "Our heartfelt prayers and sympathy go out to all of you who knew Tyrek and especially to his family," said Superintendent Jerry Gibson
