Shepherd ISD Board of Trustees hired Search Consultants Fred Rush and Dale Dixon of DRV Educational Solutions to conduct the search for the next superintendent of the school district at a special school board meeting on Wednesday, April 26. "This process is all yours, the decisions will be yours to make. We're not going to hire the superintendent for you. That's your job," Rush said. "Our job is to do the leg work for you to try to give you all of the information we can give you about each one of these candidates so you can make a good, sound decision for Shepherd ISD." Since April 18 the district has accepted applications for the superintendent position after current Superintendent Steve Pierce announced his retirement at the monthly board meeting on April 17. Board members discussed conditions for employment with the search consultants. Board members agreed on a three-year contract with annual review, preferred the future superintendent lived in the school district or had children in the district and preferred a principal, central office or superintendent level of experience. Board President Susan Bailes stated that a doctorate isn't required for the position. The board also all agreed on the salary range of $120,000 to $150,000 for the open position. "Where you fall in that range is going to be commensurate with your experience," Board Member Mike Courvell said. Board members and search consultants also discussed benefits, but final negotiations will be made later in the process. At the special meeting, board members also discussed a timeline for the search process: The deadline for applications is Friday, May 19. Through May 23 to May 30, board members will have an opportunity to review all of the application. On May 30 the board will select six to eight candidates to be interviewed starting Monday, June 5. The second round of interviews with the top candidates will happen on Saturday, June 17. A lone finalist will be named that day, and the 21-day window will begin the following day. The window allows for public comment and to finalize contract negotiations and tie up any other loose ends. On Monday, July 10 the board will meet to employ the superintendent. The tentative start day is Aug. 1, 2017. "The people we bring to you …are people we feel can do the job - that we feel are capable of doing the job," Rush said. "What you're looking on doing now is (looking at) who is the best fit for my community, who's the best fit for this board, and who we feel can do the job in this community. That's what it's going to boil down to." To submit a resume for superintendent, visit Texasisd.com
