More than 3,400 students return to schools in SJC

About 3,417 students attended classes in San Jacinto County Monday, the first day of school in both Shepherd and Coldspring/Oakhurst school districts. The first day saw lots of big smiles, a few tears and loads of excitement as students and teachers embarked on a new year of adventures in learning. Shepherd ISD's new Superintendent Steve Pierce said, "I would like to welcome every student to Shepherd ISD and I hope that they are as excited about the new school year as I am. I appreciate all the hard work and preparation that the staff has put in this past week to be ready for the students today. We are looking forward to a great year." Shepherd ISD posted the largest number of students returning to school Monday, a total of 1,854, followed by Coldspring/Oakhurst Consolidated Independent School District (COCISD) with 1,563 students returning. Prior to the first day of school, faculty, staff and administrators in COCISD welcomed students and parents back into the classrooms for Meet the Teacher Night on Thursday, Aug. 21. Shepherd ISD kicked off the new school year with in-service for new teachers on Aug. 14, while COCISD welcomed back administrators, faculty and staff members during a district convocation held Aug. 18.
