COLDSPRING – GETCAP Head Start, serving San Jacinto County, held an open house and community resource fair Oct. 10 in celebration of Head Start Awareness Month.
San Jacinto County Judge Fritz Faulkner presented a proclamation signed by all four county commissioners announcing October as Head Start Awareness Month in the county.
San Jacinto County built a state-of-art facility to house the Head Start program in 1999, and the public was invited to tour the facility during the open house. One of the highlights of the tour was the newly created Learning Garden, which is a project developed and supported by several organizations, businesses and individuals in the community.
In San Jacinto County, Head Start has been in operation since 1988. GETCAP Head Start, which serves 652 children in eight locations, added San Jacinto County in 2004. Currently there are 77 children enrolled in the local program. Head Start’s mission is to provide comprehensive services to improve the quality of life for children and families. Twenty local agencies participated in the resource fair to make parents and the community aware of resources available to them in the county.
