Shepherd gets new health clinic soon
San Jacinto News Times - December 2007
SHEPHERD – Construction on a new health center is scheduled to begin immediately in Shepherd, according to San Jacinto County Pct. 2 Commissioner Royce Wells.
The facility will be housed in the existing building where the county’s ambulance service is located on FM 424. The current building will be undergoing remodeling, providing area to continue housing the county’s ambulance service as well as an area to house the health clinic.
Wells said the county received a federal grant in the amount of $733,383 for Health Center of South East Texas.
Health Center of South East Texas already serves San Jacinto, Liberty and Polk counties. The facility will include three treatment rooms, attended by a physician’s assistant working under the direction of a physician in Cleveland, according to Wells.
“Health care resources for the uninsured and under-insured is lacking in San Jacinto County. Anyone can use the clinic. Patients will be charged on a sliding-scale fee based on income,” Wells said.
The new facility should be ready by Feb. 1, according to Wells.
