Intermediate students participate in an out-of-this-world experience
San Jacinto Newstimes - February 2008

SHEPHERD – Shepherd Intermediate 5th graders attended STARBASE Program at Ellington Field, NASA recently gaining knowledge and skills in math, science and technology.

The STARBASE program focuses on exposing students to technological environments, training and positive role models found on military bases and installations. The STARBASE program promotes hands-on classroom environment where students are actively involved in simulations, lab applications and demonstrations.

Shepherd Intermediate 5th graders attending the program put together career passports, rockets for launch and experimented with laws of motion. As an added surprise, students had the privilege of touring a U.S. Coast Guard hanger and learning about rescue efforts.
Students and teachers described the experience as an “Amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

During Day 2 of STARBASE at Ellington Field, NASA, students explored Newton’s and Bernoulli’s laws of motion as they apply to aeronautics.

“Experimenting with inertia, acceleration, thrust, drag, velocity, air pressure and momentum kept everyone’s minds and bodies busy throughout the day,” said teacher Doreen Quibedeaux.
