Trinity trio charged in assault on elderly
Trinity Standard - December 2008

CROCKETT – Three Trinity residents were in custody in Houston County last week, charged in connection with the Dec. 9 aggravated assault of an 81-year-old man.

Doyle McCrary, 22, Rebecca Cleveland, 26, and James Eric Cleveland, 26, all of Trinity, were charged with engaging in organized criminal activity, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated robbery/serious bodily injury and injury to the elderly/disabled.

All three were being held in the Houston County Jail last week.

The incident that led to the arrests was reported on Tuesday, Dec. 9. Houston County deputies responded to an assault call that occurred at 1730 County Road 1035 in the Beria Community.

The caller reported he had been struck in the head with a hammer and three suspects had fled in a silver 2000 Kia.

The victim was later identified as Hollis Ellis, 81. He was taken to East Texas Medical Center – Crockett where he was treated for his injuries.

The silver Kia was found later that same evening in Trinity County.

Information from the victim and information uncovered in the investigation led to the identities of the three suspects.

McCrary and Rebecca Cleveland voluntarily surrendered to the Houston County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday, Dec. 10. Both were booked into the jail at that time.

The third suspect, James Cleveland, fled to the Dallas area, but turned himself in there on Tuesday, Dec. 16, when family members convinced him to surrender. He was returned to Houston County late last week.
