Murder charge filed
Trinity Standard - December 2008
TRINITY – An 18-year-old Trinity man was being held early this week under a $250,000 bond after being charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of Jason Johnson, 23, of Trinity.
Cornelius Womack surrendered to police early Friday morning shortly after the shooting incident. He was being held by the Trinity County Sheriff’s Department early this week.
According to Trinity Police Chief Steven Jones, police received a 9-1-1 call at about 1 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 28, in connection with a shooting on Lue Street, near the Smith Street intersection in western Trinity.
Officers John Raiford and Millard Stains responded to the call and were subsequently joined by Officer Travis Bryan, who was off duty, and by Jones.
Jones said Womack was initially taken into custody on an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge, but that complaint was elevated to murder after Johnson died at the hospital later that day. It was believed that he suffered two gunshot wounds. “This was a real tragedy for two families and I am asking the community to pray for them both.
