Trinity County man has Olympic dreams
Trinity Standard -
GROVETON – A year ago a dream was born as a Trinity County man watched the 2010 Winter Olympics being held in Vancouver, Canada. And while snow and ice sports are not something practiced locally, Chase Seamans was captivated as he watched Team USA win gold in bobsledding. Since then, he has set his sights on joining Team USA for the 2014 games to be held in Sochi, Russia, and is asking for local support to help him fulfill his goal. “From watching the team compete and accomplish their goal, I was inspired to become and Olympian,” he said. This past September, he tried out in the sport of Skeleton, which is similar to bobsledding except competitors lie on a single-man sled and slide down an ice track at about 80 miles per hour. “I was able to score high enough on the United States Bobsled and Skeleton Federation Combine to be considered as an upcoming athlete,” he said. “Since September, I have been flying to Lake Placid, New York to the Olympic Training Center to train and begin sliding down the ice track. Seamans, a 2006 graduate of Groveton High School, has been asked to be a part of the Skeleton Developmental Team and will be living in Lake Placid from Jan. 17 through April 3. “There I will continue training to compete for a spot on the National Skeleton Team. The Olympic Committee pays for my housing, food, and training, however I have to pay for the rest of my equipment and additional expenses.” In asking for help to meet those costs, Seamans said he wants people to know that he is a Christian and his purpose in pursuing his dream is not just for a gold medal. He wants to help lead people to Jesus Christ. “He is continually faithful to place people in front of me to love, encourage and tell them the Gospel. I am asking that you would join with me in my pursuit of the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia, and the Kingdom of God. Following is a list of the items Seamans said he will need and is asking area residents to help sponsor him if possible. • Sled, including maintenance $6,000; • Helmet $300; • Speed Suit $200; • Plane tickets $1,200; • Brush Spikes $200; and • Other expenses $300. Those interested in sponsoring an item or in making a donation may send checks to: Chase Seamans, 215 Seamans Road, Trinity, TX 75862.
