Fishing derby set June 7 near Groveton

GROVETON – Children ranging in age from one to 16 are invited to take part in the 19th Annual Trinity County Fishing Derby set from Saturday, June 17.
The event will run from 8 a.m. to noon in the Trinity County Park located near the “Y” intersection of U.S. highways 94 and 287 west of Groveton.
Hosted by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and the Texas Game Warden’s Association, the event is open free of charge to youngsters and is designed to help instill a love of fishing and outdoor activities.
Hot dogs and drinks will be provided as will trophies for winners and door prizes.
Those taking part are asked to bring their own fishing equipment if possible. A number of cane polls will be available for use by children who do not have their own equipment.
According to Trinity County Game Warden Ralph Montemayor, the lake at the county park will be stocked new week with catfish to enhance the chances that the young anglers will be able to land a “big one.”
“We’re inviting everyone to come out and bring their lawn chairs to enjoy a morning of fun,” Montemayor said.
