TRINITY -- With over 50 seniors scheduled to receive their high school diplomas on Friday, top students and special guests gathered last week for the awarding of more than $236,000 in scholarships. The annual Scholarship Night was hosted in the First United Methodist Church’s Activity Center for the awarding of 28 scholarships -- some of which went to more than one student -- and the presentation of a number of other honors to members of the Trinity High School Class of 2012. Vanessa Leija was the recipient of several awards, including a $20,000 scholarship from Texas A&M University. She also picked up the $500 Charlene Carr Order of the Eastern Star Scholarship, the $500 WTB&S Scholarship and one of the seven $1,000 Trinity Scholarship Fund awards. Class valedictorian Clarissa Bell also was presented with a scholarship covering one year’s tuition and fees at any state supported school – valued at $6,000 – as well as a $2,000 Joe Werner Masonic Lodge Scholarship, $1,000 from the Trinity Scholarship Fund, a $500 Trinity Lions Club Scholarship, a $1,000 Most Holy Trinity Ladies Guild Scholarship, a $1,000 Trinity Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship and a $1,000 Calvary Tabernacle Church Scholarship. Destinay Yeager also was presented with a U.S. Navy Scholarship which is valued at up to $180,000. Among the scholarships funded locally were seven $1,000 awards presented by the Trinity Scholarship Fund (TSF). A crawfish boil fundraiser held each May generates the money for the award.
