Candidate list complete for May elections
Trinity Standard -

TRINITY – The list of candidates who will appear on the May 8 local election ballots was completed Monday when the filing deadline was reached. This year there will be opposed races in the city council, Trinity school board and Trinity hospital board elections. Early voting in the local elections will run from April 26 to May 4 and polls will be open election day, May 8, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. This year in the Trinity City Council election, the mayor and three council positions will be on the ballot. Each carries a two-year term. During the final week of filing, the only addition was Julian Weslow, who filed in the Position 2 race against incumbent Wayne Huffman. Former Mayor Billy Jack Walker also has filed in that race. In the mayor’s race, Lois Saldana is challenging longtime incumbent Mayor Lyle Stubbs. Incumbent Position 1 Councilman Clegg DeWalt and Position 2 Councilman Chris Dennis will both be unopposed. In the Trinity Independent School District’s election, there will be three incumbent board members and one challenger on the ballot seeking the three board seats. Terms on the school board are for three years. Current board members Steven Tyler, Gary Gallant and Maggie Trevino and seeking new terms while challenger Jason Bubba Smith has added his name to the list. Unlike the city council race, candidates in the school board election run on an at-large basis, meaning they all run against each other. The three who win the most votes win the seats. In the Trinity Memorial Hospital District election, a total of four board positions will be on this year’s ballot and all four will be opposed. Terms on this board are for two years. In the Position 2 race, incumbent Larry King is being challenged by Benajmin F. Prokop; Position 4 incumbent Travis Starr is being opposed by Jim Henderson; Position 6 incumbent is being challenged by Ted Garrison; and Position 8 incumbent Dave Ward is being challenged by Janice Drakw Smith.
