Candidate filing delayed
Trinity Standard -
GROVETON – Filing in both the 2012 Democratic and Republican primaries was delayed by a federal court order issued in San Antonio last week According to Trinity County Democratic Party Chairman Fredie L. Chapman, candidates may now file for positions on the party primary ballots starting on Monday, Nov. 28 and ending on Thursday, Dec. 15. Originally, the filing period was set to run from Nov. 12 through Dec. 12. The change in the filing period comes as a result of a federal court challenge now underway. The U.S. Justice Department and a number of minority groups charge that the new U.S. House and Texas Legislative districts adopted by the state earlier this year discriminate against minorities. They are asking the federal court to overturn the new district lines. Chapman noted that those seeking to file as a candidate must file campaign finance forms with the Trinity County Clerk’s office prior to filing an application for a place on the March primary ballot. Applications for placement on the primary ballot can be obtained from the Texas Secretary of State’s website or from local party chairmen. Under the order issued by the federal court, the drawing for ballot positions will now be held on Tuesday, Dec. 20.
