ETMC blood drive slated on July 12
Trinity Standard -

TRINITY —In an effort to increase the availability of blood during the peak summer season, ETMC-Trinity will host the Carter BloodCare Mobile Unit from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Friday, July 12. The community is encouraged to take a few minutes and make a donation that can mean so much to so many. Carter BloodCare Center's theme for the summer drive is "Pint for Pint," which equates into donors receiving a pint of Blue Bell Ice Cream for every pint of blood donated. In addition, individuals who donate blood during the event will receive Great Rewards Points that are redeemable for merchandise including T-shirts, ball caps and much more from the Carter BloodCare Center merchandise selection. According to Carter BloodCare Donor Recruitment Consultant Belinda Murphy, the current inventory of blood types O-negative and B-negative continues to be significantly less than the preferred supply for the community. And, this need increases during the summer months when children are out of school and families are on vacation and generally more active. Persons with the O-negative blood type make up only 7 percent of the general population, while those with B-negative are a mere 2 percent. Carter BloodCare supplies many of the trauma centers in East Texas, including ETMC-Trinity. Murphy noted that Type O-negative blood is commonly used for emergencies because any patient can receive it until their own type is known. Potential blood donors must be at least 16 years old with a parent's consent, and 17-year-olds may donate independently. Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good general health. A photo ID is required. There is no upper age limit for donors, and most medications do not interfere with donor eligibility.
