TRINITY — Pct. 2 Deputy Constable Mark Mann was awarded the Medal of Valor and a Certificate of Commendation Monday for his actions that saved Pct. 2 Constable Mark Cole from serious bodily injury, The medal was presented to Mann by Cole while the commendation was awarded by Trinity County Judge Doug Page during ceremonies Monday in Groveton. Mann was cited for halting a driver who was dragging Cole following a traffic stop. The incident occurred July 11 and resulted in Cole sustaining minor injuries. Michael Harris, 44, was charged with aggravated assault of a public servant, assault on a public servant and felony driving while intoxication as a result of the incident. Cole said he and Mann were patrolling FM 356 and spotted a pickup and driver accused of trying to run over two pedestrians. When the officers attempted to stop the vehicle, it fled into Trinity, finally stopping at the One Stop grocery parking lot at the intersection of FM 356 and Highway 94. Cole said the suspect refused to get out of his vehicle and told the officers they would have to shot him. When the suspect began pulling forward in the vehicle, Cole tried to grab the door but the vehicle accelerated with the constable's arm stuck on the vehicle. The pickup reportedly drove forward seven to 10 feet before Cole fell from the truck when Mann forced the vehicle to stop. Mann took the suspect into custody and Cole was taken to East Texas Medical Center-Trinity where he was treated for shoulder, hand and knee injuries. Mann also sustained minor injuries during the arrest.
