Trinity Standard -

By Scott Womack

Each year, on the fourth Thursday of January, the Trinity Volunteer Fire Department hosts its annual awards banquet. Trinity established the TFD in 1914 and is made up of 30 volunteer members, who responded to 110 fire and rescue emergencies in 2017. State Representative Trent Ashby was the guest speaker for the evening. Representative Ashby discussed the importance of the volunteer fire departments, pointing out that of the six counties he represents, all fire departments are fully staffed by volunteer firefighters with the exception being the City of Lufkin Fire Department. The department honored Fire Captains John Chamberlain and Billy Slaughter for 50 years of service to the citizens of Trinity and Trinity County. Each was given a plaque from the Trinity Fire Department and received a Certificate of Service from Representative Ashby and a Texas Flag from the State Capitol in Austin. Several members of the department also received Years of Service Awards, including Larry Hortman-20 years, Ed Bullion 10-years, Kevin Searcy, Gary Smith, Steve Jones and Richard Harrelson each celebrated five years of service. The Top Fireman of the Year was Hayne Huffman who responded to 140 of 145 of the fires, drills and business meetings throughout the year. The remaining Top Ten included second, Wayne Huffman, third, Travis Bryan, fourth, Truman Withers, fifth, Billy Slaughter, sixth, Scott Womack, seventh, Richard Harrelson, eighth, Allen Ramsey, ninth, Neal Smith and tenth, Bubba Schanfish. Each recipient was given a plaque along with a Certificate of Appreciation from Representative Ashby. Each December the Fire Department elects its officers to serve for the next year. The 2018 officers include Chief Hayne Huffman, Assistant Chief Wayne Huffman, Captains Billy Slaughter, John Chamberlain, Neal Smith and Bobby Rushing, Drill Captain and Secretary Richard Harrelson, Chaplain Lyle Stubbs and Certification Coordinator Scott Womack. The Trinity Volunteer Fire Department sends a special thank you to Roland and Delores Kane of Trinity Café for catering the event. The menu consisted of chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, red beans, corn casserole, rolls, banana pudding and iced tea. If you are interested in becoming a member, please contact one of the active firemen for details.
