Candidate list unchanged in local races
Trinity Standard , March 2007
TRINITY – The list of candidates who had formally entered the city council, school board and hospital district election races remained unchanged from last week.
As of Monday, only incumbent officials had filed for places on the May 12 election ballots.
Filing in all three elections got underway on Feb. 12 and will continue through Monday, March 12.
Positions open this year will include two seats open on the Trinity City Council, three seats on the Trinity Independent School District’s board of trustees and five seats on the Trinity Memorial Hospital District’s board.
In the city race, both of the incumbent council members filed for new two-year terms on the first day for filing and no one has filed to challenge them. Position 4 Councilman Neal Smith and Position 5 Councilman Charles Van Dyke are both seeking re-election.
Candidates in the city race will be required to file for one or the other of the two positions.
Applications for a position on a city ballot may be obtained at the Trinity City Hall at the corner of Walker and Elm streets.
In the school board race, current board members Gary Gallant, Debbie Quan and Steven Tyler filed for re-election to new three-years terms on the Trinity Independent School District’s board.
Candidates for the school board run on an at-large basis, which means that all those who file will be running against one another. Voters will be asked to select three candidates from among the overall list and the three contenders who garner the most votes will win the positions.
Those wishing to file for the school board election may do so during regular business hours at the Trinity Independent School District’s Administrative Office located near the intersection of Jefferson and Elm streets.
Like the city races, candidates seeking one of the five hospital board posts will file by position.
As of Monday, four of the five incumbents had filed for new two-year terms, including Jim Rippey in Position 1, Marguery Williams in Position 3, Lois Saldana in Position 5 and Jerry Russ in Position 9. Position 7 Board Member Tommy Turner had not filed by Monday but has indicated that he does plan to seek re-election.
Applications to appear on the hospital board ballot may be obtained at the East Texas Medical Center – Trinity business office off Highway 19 North.
