TRINITY – Although no arrests were made, reports of “shots fired” in the Hamilton Street area of Trinity brought Trinity police and Trinity County deputy sheriffs to the scene Sunday.
Police Chief Lynn Gentry said dispatchers received two reports Sunday, June 24, from residents on Hamilton Street and North Lakefield about the shots but when officers arrived,
they could find no witnesses to the incident.
“It was a situation where everybody heard the shots but nobody saw anything,” Gentry said. “There is not much we can do in a situation like that.”
The police chief said he was concerned when the reports came in because there has been trouble involving residents of that area in the recent past.
About three weeks earlier, two groups from that area got into a confrontation at a local night club and various members of each group have been threatening revenge against the other, Gentry said.
One deputy sheriff, Jay Robinson, suffered minor injuries during the investigation when he helped break up an argument between a man and a woman in the Hamilton Street neighborhood.
“This had nothing to do with the shooting,” Gentry said. “It was a case of a young man getting into an argument with a young lady. When the officer tried to break it up, the man resisted and the officer twisted his knee.”
David Williams, 21, of Trinity was then taken into custody on a disorderly conduct charge.
“I know this young man and it was totally out of character for him,” Gentry said. “In fact, the next morning he came down to the police department to apologize.”
Deputy Robinson was taken to East Texas Medical Center – Trinity for treatment following the incident.
