Fox found ‘guilty’ of sexual assault
Trinity Standard - November 2007
GROVETON – A 50-year-old San Jacinto County man was convicted late Friday, Nov. 9, of sexual assault by a Trinity County jury in Groveton.
Roy Lee Fox was found guilty of the Oct. 15, 2006 rape of a 44-year-old woman off Pinecrest Road south of Trinity.
The jury in the case deliberated for between seven and eight hours Friday before returning a guilty verdict at about 7:30 p.m.
Sentencing in the case is expected today (Thursday) before District Judge Elizabeth Coker in Groveton.
According to District Attorney Joe Ned Dean, Fox faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Dean said testimony during the trial indicated the incident began on the night of Oct. 15, 2006, at Bell’s Camp off Highway 19 south of Trinity.
The woman had stopped there in search of a telephone.
Fox overheard the woman and offered her the use of a cell phone. Dean said the man then offered to take the woman to a place where she could get something to eat.
After driving to Riverside and finding nothing open, Dean said the man offered to drive her to Trinity to find a restaurant.
“It was 2 in the morning so there was nothing open and he knew that,” Dean said.
As they drove into Trinity, Fox turned off Highway 19 onto Tatum Street and then turned right onto Pinecrest Road.
Fox pulled his pickup off the road and then suggested that they become intimate. Dean said the woman objected and tried to flee but Fox struck her and sexually assaulted her in the vehicle.
