Two sought after fleeing from sheriff

TRINITY -- Timber growers and those interested in the forestry will gather in Trinity on Saturday, July 28, to mark the 25th anniversary of the Trinity County Forest Landowners Association.

The anniversary will be celebrated during a program from 9 a.m. to noon at the First National Bank in Trinity, located at the corner of Robb (Highway 19) and Madison streets in Trinity.

 During the program, the history and future challenges of the East Texas forestry industry will be the topic the scheduled speakers.

Dr. Mike Legg from the Stephen F. Austin State University College of Forestry in Nacogdoches will present “History of Forestry in East Texas” while Jim Hull, director of the Texas Forest Service will discuss “Challenges for the Future of Forestry.”

Ed Barron, Texas Forest Service (retired) will speak on “History of County Forest Landowners Associations.”

Both Barren and Hull were present at the first meeting of the association in 1982.

The group also will receive updates on forest management practices and will view a collection of photos of the old Longleaf forest from The Thompson Collection: A Rare Photographic Look at Lumbering in East Texas, 1908, The American Lumberman. A reprint of this book is being prepared and ordering information will be available at the meeting.

Formed on Sept. 13, 1982, the TCFLA was designed to help encourage the development of timber resources on privately owned land in Trinity County.

Included in the objectives of the group is to encourage all landowners to properly manage the forest and develop a soil conservation plan; educate landowners about good harvesting practices; provide continuing education concerning forest management practices; inform members on the status of the local forest resource and to aggressively promote activities to increase this resource; and to keep members informed of current timber prices.

Initial officers of the association included President G.G. Gibson of Trinity, Vice President V.B. Woods of Woodlake; and Secretary Dr. Sam R. Barnes of Trinity.

Current officers include President Dan Barnes of Trinity, Vice President Paul McKinney of Fort Worth and Secretary-Treasurer Jane Baxter of Nashville, Tenn.
