First alcohol sales two-three months away
Polk County Enterprise - June 2006
LIVINGSTON – It most likely will be about two months before Polk Countians may purchase beer and wine in stores and about three months before they may purchase mixed beverages in local restaurants.
Through the passage of two propositions in the May 13 local option election, Polk Countians will be able to purchase beer and wine in grocery and convenience stores and mixed drinks in restaurants. However, no store or restaurant may make application until the election returns are canvassed and certified. The vote canvass is on the agenda for the next regular meeting of the Polk County Commissioners’ Court at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Click Here for Complete Article!

LISD adopts drug testing policy
Polk County Enterprise - June 2006
LIVINGSTON – Beginning with the 2006-2007 school year, students in grades seven through 12 who are involved in extracurricular activities in the Livingston Independent School District will be subject to random drug testing.
A policy to that effect was approved during Monday night’s regular meeting of the LISD Board of Trustees. Procedures for drug testing students require informed consent of students upon their registration for extracurricular activities. Any student not giving consent to take part in the random testing will not be allowed to participate in the program until consent is given. The LISD Board of Trustees will determine the frequency and number of students tested. Through the policy, the board has reserved the right to test any participant in extracurricular activities if there is a justified suspicion on the sponsor’s part to drug test the student during the next drug testing session.

Lake level up by almost 1 foot
Trinity Standard - May 2006

LIVINGSTON – The waters of Lake Livingston have risen by almost a foot since the dam gates were finally closed on Tuesday, April 25. According to the Trinity River Authority (TRA), the lake’s elevation was at 127.95 feet above mean sea level as of Tuesday, May 9 – up from the Hurricane Rita imposed elevation of 127. While the almost one-foot rise in the water level in two weeks was very encouraging, officials could still not predict how long it would take for the lake to rise to its normal elevation of 131 feet. Rainfall in the Trinity River Basin from the dam north to the Dallas area would determine how fast the water will rise during the coming weeks.

Life sentence handed down
Houston County Courier - Posted May 2006

A 45-year-old Crockett man was sentenced to life in prison Thursday on a charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child. Jeremiah Mike Denby was indicted last year for the Sept. 17, 2005, sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl.  A Houston County jury found him guilty of that offense late Wednesday afternoon after less than 30 minutes of deliberation. Denby was sentenced by Judge Pam Foster Fletcher, presiding judge of the 349th Judicial District Court. According to District Attorney David E. Cervantes, a life sentence was mandated because the state proved that Denby had a 1991 conviction for sexual assault.
