Wounded Lady Lions swept at home

Livingston was swept in three sets during the first home appearance of 2025, as Woodville won 25-16, 29-27, and 25-17 Tuesday.

Tied at nine in the first set, the Lady Eagles would score 11 of the next 15 points to take a comfortable lead and soon a 1-0 advantage.

Livingston grabbed a 6-0 head start to begin the second set, but Woodville would soon tie it at 12. Still tied at 22, the lead changed hands multiple times before Woodville would win with their 29th point.

The Lady Lions were close to closing the set out on a few occasions, but could not get the final point needed. Three starters are already missing from the lineup due to injury.

“I think right now with any coach and any team, they are going to struggle with injuries whenever you have starting players, but we just have to roll with it,” new head volleyball coach Alyssa Fielder said. “The girls that are here and healthy just have to show up. Yes, it is rough right now, but I would rather have that at the beginning than toward district.”

Maddie Akers is out with a rotator cuff injury after being hurt in the first week. Audrey Rios and Emily Blackmon are both out with concussions. All three are starters for the Lady Lions.

“It really did help to be around the girls in the summertime and build that relationship. I think now we are just trying for little pieces that we were missing. It is the small things – energy, communication, and how well they play next to each other. It might be chaotic right now, but I'd rather that happen in the beginning than toward the end of the season.”

Tied at 13 in the final set, Woodville scored six of the next seven helping them to eventually take the match.

“For right now, I am the type of person that wants clean volleyball,” Fielder said. “I think with our main setter being out right now, the adjustment to that is lacking. It is the beginning of the season, and we have to have a little patience and let them figure it out. These are the games where we can figure it out.”

Livingston is winless through three games, also playing Lufkin and Carthage on the road.

“I think our biggest thing with our offense is that passing is there, but our offense has to get better. We have to make better serves.”

The coach also mentioned how she wants more communication from her players while on the floor.

Livingston next plays at home Tuesday versus Coldspring and Friday when they welcome Corrigan-Camden.
