Big Sandy basketball is on to the regional semifinals after a 53-34 win over Granger Friday in the area round at Normangee High School.
Just as the game before, the Wildcats started the game shooting well from the field.
"I didn't expect that two games in a row, but we did. We shot the lights out in the first," Big Sandy coach Dalton Flowers said. "I have to give Granger some credit, they are a lot better than they looked on film. They were physical, athletic, and quick. They really kind of gave us fits after our initial run. They were physical and making it tough for us to score.”
Big Sandy has been one of the area's best defensive squads for the past couple of years, and that showed again Friday.
"We played lights out defensively," Flowers said. "I have to credit one of our players that comes off the bench, but he could start for most of our teams in district. Lens Flowers played most of the game tonight, because we had a kid that we really needed him to guard and he shut him down. I think he had eight points total for the game.
"Shudey (Beene-Williams) shot the ball really well for us. We're battling some injuries right now, but the kids played through them. My point guard, Naki (Thompson) stood out and got the ball where it needed to go. He probably had about seven assists."
The coach said Jamesley Flowers, one of the team's leaders, was a standout defensively. Beene-Williams was also mentioned for swatting four or five blocked shots.
The coach was concerned about Granger being a larger team. The majority of those on the court were over six feet.
Beene-Williams led Big Sandy with 22 points, Thompson had 11, and Jamesley Flowers had eight.
The Wildcats moved on to play Goldthwaite in Caldwell Tuesday.
