Battle of Highway 287

The Corrigan-Camden Bulldogs will start the 2025 district schedule on the road versus the rival Groveton Indians this Friday.

In this year’s Battle of Highway 287, the Bulldogs take a short drive to Groveton, looking for a second straight win over the Indians and a strong start in district.

“We are healthy going into this week. We had a great opportunity during the open week to work on fundamentals like tackling, blocking and route recognition on defense,” said Bulldog head coach Brett Ratliff. “Just cleaning some things up, getting ready for district play.”

First-year head coach for Groveton, Scott Green, took over that program in place of previous athletic director, Mike Waldie.

Green previously served as the offensive coordinator at Lufkin High School.

“Green is building a great staff over there and this will still be a rivalry game,” Ratliff said. “I do not expect anything less than fireworks. We have to play a full four quarters.”

The Indians have struggled so far this season and ended non-district play last month on a four-game losing streak. Groveton’s one win came in the season opener, which was a 34-19 victory on the road over the Alto Yellowjackets.

Since then, Groveton has struggled in mainly blowout losses to Trinity, Lovelady, Grapeland and Frankston. During that non-district schedule, Groveton managed to score an average 21 points but also allowed 46 points on average in that time.

By comparison, Corrigan averaged 27 points per game while allowing under an average of 23 points during the non-district schedule.

Corrigan edged Groveton 20-18 in last season’s matchup. In that game, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 14-0 lead before the Indians stormed back with 18 unanswered points to briefly take control.

Corrigan regained momentum late in the third quarter with a long touchdown pass to reclaim the lead, then relied on defensive stops and clock management in the final minutes to secure the tight victory.

Key offensive weapons for the Groveton offense include senior quarterback Ty Torregrossa and senior running back Ramello Wolfe.

Kickoff for the district opener in Groveton is set for 7 p.m. this Friday.
