Big dam issue

A dam that held water in a pond at Pedigo Park burst, draining most of the water and wildlife. The dam was built just in front of Long King Creek.

Livingston City Manager Billy Wiggins said it is too early to know for sure what caused the break.

“Our guys are going to be trying to figure that out, take a look at it, and then try to get a game plan of getting it repaired,” he said. “Initially, we’ll try to do it ourselves if we can. If it’s going to be above us, then we’ll probably get our engineer that we work with and then go from there.”

Wiggins said there hasn’t been any issues with the pond in the past. It has been part of the park for well over 20 years, where some of the Kid Fish events are held.

Most of the fish and creatures living in the pond traveled with the water down Long King Creek.

There is another pond in Pedigo Park that has no dam, and is popular for the ducks that enjoy gathering on most days. The city manager said catfish and bass can be found in both.

Wiggins expects work to begin on what is known by the city as the “back pond” in the next few weeks. A cause will be determined, and citizens should be able to enjoy the area as they once did in the future with help from a state organization.

“We are indeed going to fix it, and we are going to restock it,” Wiggins said. “The Texas Parks and Wildlife, they help us out with restocking. They have a restocking program.”
