District begins with one of 14-2A’s best

The Corrigan-Camden Bulldogs return home Friday night, as they start the district schedule against the Centerville Tigers.

Corrigan enters 14-2A competition with a 2-2 record after closing its non-district schedule with a convincing 34-7 road victory over Alto last week.

Centerville comes to Corrigan at 1-3 after falling 28-14 against the Mart Panthers in its final non-district match.

For the Bulldogs, the first four games have produced mixed results, but also signs of progress from a young team.

Corrigan opened the season with a 56-0 loss against Hardin before responding the following week with a 35-22 victory over Colmesneil. The Bulldogs then struggled in a 42-9 road loss at Shelbyville before putting together their strongest performance of the young season against Alto.

Senior running back Derrick Reagie continues to lead Corrigan’s ground attack through four games, while sophomore quarterback Mikey Murphy has settled into the offense.

Corrigan sophomore receiver Emmanuel Foreman has emerged as one of the Bulldogs’ biggest threats in the passing game.

Bulldog junior quarterback Da’Tavin Love has also taken plenty of snaps under center to help expand Corrigan‘s run options.

“We just learned how to play together. The competition we played during a non-district is very stiff,” said Bulldog head coach Brett Ratliff. “Every year, your identity is different, even though the core may be the same. I think we have started to find ours in this unique year.”

The Bulldogs will now turn their attention toward a familiar district opponent in Centerville.

Under longtime head coach and athletic director Kyle Hardee, Centerville is coming off a 5-6 season in which the Tigers finished 4-1 in district play before falling in the bi-district round of the playoffs.

The program had posted four consecutive winning seasons before last year’s 5-6 finish, including a 9-2 record in 2024.

Hardee entered this season replacing a veteran group that included nine graduating seniors who had reached the playoffs in each of their four seasons.

Centerville has only seven seniors on this year’s roster, with junior defensive end/tight end Chris Bell, senior lineman David Nunley and junior running back/linebacker Cooper Wilson among the players highlighted entering the season.

The Tigers have also gone through an up-and-down non-district schedule this year.

Centerville opened with a 29-7 loss to Groesbeck, before earning its first victory with a 20-14 road win over Crawford. The Tigers then showed their ability to score in a 49-35 loss at Mildred before finishing non-district play with the 28-14 loss to Mart.

Despite the 1-3 record, Centerville has remained competitive at times and brings a physical style into district competition.

“Centerville is consistently sound and always doing things the right way. Their execution is good and they have had a group of players these past years that are very similar in size and strength,” Ratliff said. “Anytime we are playing these guys, I am most concerned about how we get off the field on third down. They will get us in third-down situations also, so how do we convert on those?”

Friday’s matchup continues a familiar series between Corrigan and Centerville. The Bulldogs picked up wins over the Tigers in 2018 and 2019, but Centerville has had the upper hand in several of the more recent meetings.

The Tigers handed Corrigan its first loss of the 2022 season with a 56-21 victory in a regular-season finale that decided the district championship, then followed with wins of 49-20 in 2024 and 42-14 last season.

Kickoff between the Bulldogs and Tigers is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday in Corrigan.
