Georgia-Pacific recently presented donations to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Polk County and Diboll to support programs focused on mentoring, tutoring, recreational activities for local youth. The contribution will help provide students with safe, engaging opportunities that encourage learning, personal growth, and positive relationships.
“We are proud to support the Boys & Girls Club of Polk County and the positive impact it continues to make in our community,” said Yana Ogletree, Georgia-Pacific Public and Government Affairs Manager.
“Investing in our youth is an investment in our future, and we are pleased to help support a program that changes lives every day.”
In addition to supporting the Clubs regular afterschool and summer programs, Georgia-Pacific recently helped the Diboll club construct a computer classroom as part of the organization’s “Leadership in Training” or LIT program. Additionally, Georgia-Pacific has also provided funding for a Boys & Girls summer program that is currently hosted at Corrigan Elementary. After more than 47 years of dedicated service, Rito Vera is retiring from Georgia-Pacific’s Camden Lumber, bringing to a close a career defined by hard work, loyalty, and commitment.
Vera began his career with the company in 1980 as a member of Camden Lumber’s cleanup crew. Shortly afterward, he moved to the sawmill where he worked as a deckhand. Throughout the years, he held different roles across the operation, including serving as a loader operator.
Fittingly, Vera ends his career in the same role where much of his journey began, as a sawmill deckhand. Reflecting on his career, Vera said he is grateful for the relationships he built over the years and appreciative of the way both his coworkers and the company supported him throughout his career.
“I have been blessed to provide a good life for my family,” said Vera. “I felt like I was paid well, and this job helped put my kids through school. It allowed me to build a nice life for my family and I’m thankful for that.”
Over nearly five decades, Vera became known for his strong work ethic and dependable presence.
“His dedication and ‘can do’ attitude contributed to the continuous success of Camden Lumber,” said Jerry Gunter, Camden Lumber Plant Manager. “We will miss Vera’s experience, strong work ethic, and steady presence. Over the years, he earned the respect of his coworkers and built lasting relationships. He will be missed, but we are grateful for his 47.5 years of loyal service. We wish him a well-deserved retirement.”
Recently, Georgia-Pacific hosted a retirement party in honor of Vera. Colleagues and friends gathered to celebrate his incredible 47.5-year career with gifts, a commemorative trophy, and a cake.
As he prepares for the next chapter of his life, Vera looks forward to spending more time with his children and grandchildren, caring for his sheep on his farm, and enjoying family gatherings.
“Family is what I’m most excited about,” said Vera. “I can’t wait to make more memories with them!”
