The Goodrich girls basketball season ended Monday night in the opening round of the playoffs, dropping a 60-35 contest to Wells at Corrigan-Camden High School.
After a slow start for both teams offensively, the second quarter saw several shots find the bottom of the net. Goodrich was able to collect 15 points in the second quarter, but Wells countered with 24 of their own.
“In the beginning, it was pretty good and we were up,” Lady Hornet coach Khadijah Carter said. “We got down about 10 going into halftime; we gave up a lot of open threes. We came back out after halftime and started letting them drive to the basket. That is pretty much what killed us.”
The Lady Hornets finished second place in District 25-1A, dropping just three games in league play.
“Normally our second half is our stronger half, but we were just letting them drive and nobody was helping. There was just no sense of urgency. It didn’t help that we were looking for the fouls to be called, and we were getting everything called on us, while they weren’t really getting much. Sometimes you just have to play.”
Tamia Figgs led the Lady Hornets with 10 points, and Bra’Niyah Wyatt and Aaliyah Wright each scored nine. In their final basketball game, seniors Tanyreauna Criswell had four points and Liseidy Balbuena three.
“T is a good player,” Carter said of her senior. “She is our point guard and whenever I need her to bring the ball down, she does. Liseidy is a little bit quiet, but she will get it done and shoots whenever she is open.”
