Leggett basketball led throughout Tuesday’s tip with Goodrich, claiming a 78-15 home win over their rivals to the south.
The Pirates began the game with an 11-0 run, and the action did not progress much better from there for the Hornets. Goodrich would acquire no more than two field goals in a quarter. Meanwhile, Leggett scored all they would need in the first with 18.
“The defense was kind of lacking and we still didn't play to our potential,” Pirate coach Ra’Shod Jefferson said. “No matter what, we still have to take every game like it is our last and get out there to play. Inside, we didn't rebound like we should and gave up a lot of second-chance shots. On offense and defense, we gave up rebounds when we should have been inside. My bigs were standing outside instead of going in.”
Isaiah Henderson led all scores with 21 points, Jace Railey 17 and Mason Grimm had 14. For the Hornets, sophomore Zatavius Bowens led with nine.
Leggett will not reach the postseason, but still has significant challenges with Burkeville and Brookeland in their final two contests.
Goodrich has long been eliminated from playoff contention and is looking to the future. Coach Lester King said he has help on the way from his junior high squad.
“I have three eighth grade boys and 10 of them are sixth graders. One is a seventh grader and if he gets out and works, he will be good. They get after it and they hustle. I like it. There are two good-sized boys in that (eighth grade) group. Then, there is a smaller one that needs to handle the ball a little better to become my guard, but he hustles. When we played Apple Springs at home, he stole the ball about eight or nine times, but going to the basket, he missed the layup every time. If those three eighth graders will come and work in the summer, they will get better. This basketball isn't an easy game, you've got to work at it.”
Finishing the hoops year, the Hornets have a trip to Brookeland and return to host the Cardinals of High Island Tuesday.
