The Onalaska City Council approved the release of Police Officer Joshua Watson during a special called meeting Tuesday. Watson previously served as the school resource officer for Onalaska ISD.
“On Oct. 3, 2024, an incident occurred at the Onalaska Junior Senior High School during the Meet the Wildcat athletic fundraiser involving the accidental discharge of a school resource officer’s firearm. The Onalaska Police Department is currently investigating the incident and wants staff, parents and students to know there is no threat to the safety of the school,” a statement released by the Onalaska Police Department said.
A subsequent statement from Onalaska ISD followed.
“The Onalaska Police Department is investigating the accidental discharge of a weapon by a School Resource Officer on Oct. 3 at the Junior-Senior High School Campus. There were no injuries in this event. Onalaska ISD will have counselors available for students at both district campuses.”
In other business, Council approved extending the burn ban.
