All six school districts in Polk County have cancelled classes for Monday, Jan. 26. This includes Livingston ISD, Corrigan-Camden ISD, Onalaska ISD, Goodrich ISD, Big Sandy ISD and Leggett ISD.
We have received the following update from the Houston/Galveston National Weather Service. Precipitation has exited to the east. Hazardous travel conditions may persist through at least Monday morning. Refreezing of wet roads tonight is expected. An Extreme Cold Warning is in effect for Polk County through noon Tuesday. Hard freezes continue tonight and tomorrow night which increases the chance for damage to poorly protected pipes, even indoors.
Bitterly cold temperatures are expected tonight into Monday Morning. Icy areas will be slow to melt in areas that do not rise above freezing. Most of Southeast Texas will stay at or below freezing for approximately one to three days before rising back above 32 degrees. Wind chills are expected to remain hazardous until Tuesday afternoon.
Roads are open; however, we are receiving reports that bridges are accumulating ice. Travel is discouraged. Bridges on US Hwy. 59 from Corrigan to Livingston continue to accumulate ice. TxDOT reports ice is on the roadway at the Trinity River bridge in Goodrich. According to TxDOT, crews are treating and patrolling.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office reports that ice is accumulating on bridges along FM 942 W between FM 350 N and US Hwy 59. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office reports that ice is starting to accumulate on the overpass by Boot Barn on Pan American Dr. The bridge at FM 356 at Brushy Creek is also icy. Please avoid travel today as icy conditions may exist on roads, bridges, and overpasses throughout the county.
TxDOT day-shift crews worked continuously to remove ice and fallen trees from roads. Plummeting temps along with sleet and freezing rain tonight will continue to make travel hazardous, even as night-shift crews continue to maintain roads. Please continue to avoid traveling unless necessary.
Polk County is on the very fringe of the main impact from sleet and freezing. In an abundance of caution, all public Polk County Buildings will be closed on Monday. All essential services will continue to be available and will respond as needed. Employees need to report to their elected official or department head for further instructions. The Sheriff and TxDOT request that you minimize travel today.
Jury Duty for Monday for the 411th District Court in Polk County has been cancelled. You do not need to report. The county buildings will be closed.
The City of Livingston City Hall, Livingston Municipal Library and Livingston Main Street/Parks Office will be closed on Monday due to the winter storm and icy weather. Please be cautious, stay home, stay warm. The City of Livingston will continue to monitor the weather and pass information to our citizens as it becomes available.
There are currently no road closures to report. Overpasses in town have been icy and crews from the city and TxDOT are working to make them safer. Temperatures may continue to drop, and road conditions could worsen today and overnight. If you can stay home, please do.
