Regan Riddle, a culinary teacher and Family Career & Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) advisor at Livingston High School and four FCCLA students – Zoey Tisdale, Zachary Hare, Cheyenne Falls and Alejandra Guera – recently provided a program for the Rotary Club of Livingston.

Students from a variety of pathways – education and training, human service, hospitality and tourism, culinary arts – participate in FCCLA, which has diversity of members, in addition to building confidence, leadership and lifelong skills.

The students speaking put the spotlight on the culinary arts program which they said teaches communication skills and time management. The program partners with local businesses to provide real world experience and also provides the opportunity for the students to earn various certifications.

LISD’s culinary arts program has three chef/teachers and the students are provided with industry experience as they learn about knife skills, mise en place, kitchen organization, place settings and food service.

The students said the program helps with professional speaking, projecting and community service and also helps build real world experience through the learning of leadership skills and technical skills. It also provides the opportunity to discover career pathways the students might not have known about previously.

During the fall semester the students hosted and taught children’s classes, catered both pre-game and post-game meals for the football team, provided hospitality for various tournaments and in-house programs for both staff and students and for the first time, began receiving catering requests from the community.
