Livingston High School FFA Student Luisa Perez is the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s Grand Champion Public Speaker. The preliminary rounds were March 15 with the finals on March 16.

Perez said she began public speaking last fall, although this was her first year competing at the majors.

“It’s not extemporaneous speaking, but a speech that we’ve already written and have a lot of knowledge of,” she said, adding that hers was on plant science – specifically, crops breeding corn.

“All of my teachers and administrators were able to give feedback (in the days leading up to competition),” she said.

Though she is only a sophomore, Perez is already thinking ahead about her future. She wants to attend Texas A&M University and major in biomedical sciences with plans to become an obstetrician/gynecologist.

“I’ve always been the kid that isn’t afraid to speak up for those around me. I have leadership skills and enjoy using my voice. I’ve always loved being someone who can advocate for others,” Perez said.

Perez is active with a full slate of activities in addition to FFA. She plays on both the varsity tennis and golf teams, is on the debate team, serves on student council, participates in UIL academics, Best Buddies and volunteers locally. She also served as last year’s Junior Miss Polk County.

Perez is the daughter of Maria and Jeffrey Parmelly.
