In a surprise announcement during Tuesday’s regular meeting of the Polk County Commissioners Court, representatives of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) presented County Judge Sydney Murphy with the Road Hand Award, the highest honor TxDOT bestows upon members of the public who champion transportation projects and programs in their communities.
Murphy is one of just six Texans recognized with the prestigious award this year.
The judge was nominated for the award by the Lufkin District “because of her unwavering leadership and efforts to bring the Corrigan Relief Route to completion.
“Judge Murphy’s support has been instrumental in helping move these critical infrastructure projects forward,” Lufkin District Engineer Kelly Morris, who presented a certificate and pin to the judge, said.
“Polk County residents are fortunate to have Sydney Murphy as their county judge,” Clint Jones, area engineer for the Livingston Office, said. “She stands out as a civil servant who always has the best interests of her community at heart.”
Muphy’s name will be inscribed on the Road Hand Hall of Honor award plaque hanging in the foyer of the historic Dewitt C. Greer Building directly across from the Capitol building in Austin.
TxDOT officials said Murphy has always made herself available to speak at TxDOT safety campaign events and public meetings and that she tirelessly keeps her constituents informed of the ongoing work on projects throughout Polk County. They said her background in education, counseling and leadership is an asset in engaging the public, promoting safety and supporting important projects.
The award originated in 1973 and since then, only 278 people have received it. The award highlights the importance of collaboration between TxDOT, local governments and other stakeholders to deliver transportation projects.
It acknowledges individuals who have helped to ensure the successful development and delivery of transportation projects, fostering a stronger, more efficient, and safer transportation system for Texas.
Active state legislators or people directly involved in the transportation industry, including active or retired TxDOT employees, are not eligible for it.
