The City of Onalaska has a new mayor and city council member and the City of Corrigan has a new council member following the May 2 General Election.
Unofficial results indicate Oz Canel was elected mayor of Onalaska with 260 votes, or 53.06%, defeating Incumbent Onalaska Mayor James W. Arnett who received 226 votes, or 46.12%. A third candidate, Bart Goldsmith, received four votes, or .82%.
Four people were seeking election to two “at large” seats that are presently held by Kevin Arnett and Kathy Black Lott. The four people running were Kevin Arnett, Kathy Black Lott, Michael Gooch and Traci Dennison. As these are “at large” positions, the two people with the highest number of votes were elected to the positions.
Lott retained her seat, garnering 240 votes, or 27.81%. Also elected to the Onalaska City Council was Traci Dennison who received 233 votes, or 27%. Kevin Arnett received 179 votes, or 20.74%, and Michael Gooch received 211 votes, or 24.45%.
In the City of Corrigan, the mayor’s position and Positions 2 and 4 were on the ballot. Incumbent Mayor Johnna Lowe Gibson will remain mayor as she did not receive any challengers. Bill Safford opted not to run again for Position 2 although two others filed for that position, Minnie Harrison and Lucia “Candy” Ascencio. Ascencio prevailed, receiving 59 votes to Harrison’s 49 votes. Phelicha Jolly will remain in Position 4 as she ran unopposed.
Goodrich, Onalaska and Corrigan-Camden (ISDs) would have held trustee elections on May 2. However, as no one other than the incumbents filed, the three districts were able to cancel their elections and deem the incumbents reelected.
