Nearly three years later, Texas Rangers have made two arrests in connection with a deadly crash that killed two Stephen F. Austin State University students.

The two student-athletes in a Nissan Versa were traveling southbound on US 59 at approximately 1:32 p.m. Jan. 20, 2023 when an 18-wheeler made a left turn from Plant Road traveling north onto US 59. According to the report filed by the Corrigan Police Department, the Nissan Versa struck the trailer of the 18-wheeler, causing the vehicle to become trapped under the trailer.

The driver of the Nissan Versa, Micah McAfoose, 18, succumbed to his injuries upon impact. The passenger, Graylan Spring, 19, was airlifted to HCA Houston Healthcare in Conroe, where he later succumbed to his injuries received in the accident. The driver of the 18-wheeler suffered no injuries.

On Nov. 5, Texas Rangers arrested Marlin Kendall Hughes, 53 of Corrigan, the owner of the trucking company, and Antonio Sandoval Jr., 70 of Diboll, the truck’s driver, on charges of tampering with physical evidence with intent to impair. They were both released on bond on Nov. 6.

An affidavit signed by Texas Ranger Joshua Benson indicates Hughes called Sandoval after the crash asking if the truck had a dash camera system and upon learning that it did, told Sandoval to bring it to him. Upon law enforcement’s receipt of the dash camera, however, a forensic technician determined there was no data on it.
