The Polk County Retired Teachers’ Association (PCRTA) honored Corrigan-Camden ISD at its monthly meeting Feb. 5. C-CISD Superintendent Brian Aiken was the guest speaker and gave an overview of the district in which he discussed opportunities afforded students taking classes through the CTE (Career/Technology Education) program. Students are able to earn certifications in fields that will give them a competitive edge in the job market.

He said that C-CISD is also proud to partner with Stephen F. Austin State University and Sam Houston State University in a yearlong teaching residency program for teacher candidates, offering classroom experience in the partnering school district.

In addition to Aiken’s presentation, PCRTA Grant Committee members Kathleen McKenzie and Pam Nettles presented a grant to Corrigan-Camden Elementary Life Skills teacher Miranda Dugat, who will use the grant to purchase visual timers and a crash pad for the sensory lab.

Additionally, Mary Hunt presented a check to Corrigan-Camden Elementary Librarian Chelsea Fitzgerald to be used for needs in the library and to purchase books so that every kindergarten and first grade student in the district will receive a book. Providing kindergarten and first grade students with a book of their own is a part of The Children’s Book Project, a statewide project of the Texas Retired Teachers Association to promote the love of reading in young students.
